The Council of State Governments’ Eastern Regional Conference (CSG|ERC) focuses on ten policy areas of primary concern to the northeast through its committee and task force structure. These include agriculture, criminal justice, economic development, education, energy and environment, fiscal affairs, healthcare, military & veterans’ affairs, transportation and US-Canada relations.

These issues often have a special regional niche that involve both multi-state problem solving and/or state-federal advocacy promoting northeast interests. Examples of the latter range from the Dairy Compact and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and Amtrak funding.

Other policy issues are covered through various electronic and print publications as well as through special programming at the Annual Meeting or special seminars.

The CSG-ERC Executive reviews the organization’s policy programming and committee/task force structure on a biennial basis to determine if any new entities or programs should be added or current ones eliminated.

The committees and task forces membership includes representatives of the legislative and executive branches selected by the member jurisdictions’ legislative appointing authorities and governors, respectively. In the case of the Criminal Justice Board of Advisers, judicial branch officials are participating members, too.
