The Education Program works with state officials from the 18 ERC member jurisdictions to provide a policy forum, a vehicle for sharing best practices, and structure for advocacy on education issues affecting the states in the Northeast. The program is led by an 18 member steering committee and staffed by Kaylan Sobel, Education Policy Analyst.
2014 Annual Meeting Education Session: 21st Century Assessments
This year’s Education Committee session at the CSG-ERC Annual Meeting featured a panel during its session on the topic of 21st Century Assessments, suggested by one of our members. CSG-ERC Education Committee Chair Assemblyman Michael Benedetto moderated the discussion of new strategies being developed and implemented to measure student learning. Panelists included:
- Mitchell Chester, Massachusetts Commissioner of Education and Chair of the Partnership for the Assessment of College and Career Readiness (PARCC)
- Jacqueline King, Director of Higher Education Collaboration with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)
- Former Maryland Superintendent Nancy Grasmick, who oversaw the largest, longest-running statewide performance-based assessment prior to the passage of No Child Left Behind
- Mark Surabian, practitioner and instructor of using assistive technology and universal design to support students with special needs and English Language Learners
